- compaction systems using information technology - |
| Last year the “2009 Symposium on Construction Methods and Equipment” was held under the auspices of the Japan Construction Mechanization Association. This symposium saw vigorous question and answer sessions, and many presentations on rationalization, cost reduction, energy efficiency and environment, all reflecting research and development, and the current social circumstances. Also, case studies covered the applications of information technology, a field promoted and encouraged by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. We present here a summary of the paper, “A Work Study of Applying Information Technology to Compaction Information System CIS” for which Sakai received an excellent thesis award. |

| In current methods of compaction of roadbeds, compaction equipment (rollers) implement information technology for real time measurement and control of the compaction rate and other functions using GPS or Total Station (all-time positioning system). This digitization aims to increase efficiency and minimize construction costs, including labour savings on quality management, while attaining the same construction conditions as with conventional manpower. Recently, with the increasing demand for digitization in construction of roadbed and asphalt paving, the installation of three-dimensional machine control linked to a positioning system on graters and asphalt finishers has facilitated high precision operations and real-time operation control. Further, with control of the compaction rate and vibration in rollers, it is possible to monitor and control the temperature of compacted asphalt paving using temperature sensors, and to manage compaction quality by determining the state of the compaction from the response acceleration of the compacted material (the reaction to the applied vibration). |

| The work study of the application of the latest Sakai Compaction Information System (CIS) to roadbed and asphalt paving verified its ability to monitor and control the temperature during compaction and to detect real-time any actual deficiency in the compaction. In outline, the CIS, as shown in the diagram below, consists of the roller positioning system, the response acceleration monitoring device (or CCV-Compactor Control Value device), temperature sensor and the display showing the condition of compaction. The display is a large touch panel display that is easy for the operator to see and use. As shown in the diagram, the display shows the compaction rate in different colours according to the compaction rate at each point. In addition to use for onsite operations the data can be more quickly compiled into a datasheet for the client and can provide control of the comprehensive integrated data from preparation of the site to compaction of the paving. |
